Helping Californians Choose Workers' Compensation Insurance
How to Save:When you purchase Workers' Compensation insurance for your business it is important to remember your employees won’t be contributing to the premiums. This is one expense that employers are required by law to pay completly.
Your workers com rates may or may not be predetermined. Even in regions where they are predetermined, however, calculating exact premiums is not a totally cut-and-dry process, and quotes may differ depending on a broker’s approach. That’s why it’s always a good idea to get quotes from three different brokers, regardless of your province or state.
When you buy workers comp coverage, make sure your employees are classified correctly, and that your business is being charged the correct amount for each employee. If rates ever go up unexpectedly, it’s up to you to look into the situation and get an explanation as soon as possible.
If you want to keep premiums down, it’s a good idea to make a habit of providing a safe and healthy environment for your employees. That’s the best and only way to keep your record clean, and prevent claims against your policy.
Typically, the following jobs will not be covered by workers comp:
- part-time domestic employees in private homes
- newspaper carriers
- real estate sales agents
- some agricultural workers
- casual workers*
- unpaid volunteers (who are not considered employees in the first place)
- sole proprietors
- partners
